Jerusalem had fallen to General Allenby by Christmas 1917, with the Ottoman Army retreating north. Following a winter consolidation, Allenby took Jericho in February 1918. But the German Spring Offensive on the Western Front frustrated the British war effort in the Middle East as troops and attention shifted back to Europe.
The First World War was the first truly global conflict. From 1914 to 1918, fighting took place across several continents, at sea and, for the first time, in the air.
Fought in September 1918, this was the climactic battle of the Sinai and Palestine campaign of the First World War. Ottoman forces found themselves encircled by British Empire forces under General Edmund Allenby.
