Guidon, Ringwood Light Dragoons, c1802
For centuries, the uniforms, standards and ceremonial items used by soldiers in the British Army have been beautifully embroidered with goldwork. In this special workshop, take inspiration from the animal-themed embroidery in our collection and learn how to elevate your own embroidery skills under the supervision of tutors from Hand & Lock.
By the end of the weekend, you'll have covered the techniques of cutwork, padding, pearl purl, appliqué, thread work, silk shading and French knots.
10.00am – 4.30pm
In the morning, a curator will show you some fine examples of goldwork from the National Army Museum’s collection, explaining their historic significance. A representative from Hand & Lock will then discuss the techniques used in the embroidery.
After lunch, you'll take part in an embroidery class and have a go at a design inspired by the items you've seen.
10.00am – 4.30pm
On the second day, you’ll continue to work on your design in our embroidery class, before taking home the finished product.
