Embroidery Course: Irish Identity

Embroidered sabretache of the 8th (King’s Royal Irish) Light Dragoons, c1840

Embroidered sabretache, c1840

Elevate your embroidery skills on this two-day course inspired by the Museum’s collection and led by experts from Hand & Lock, London’s premier embroidery house.

For centuries, the British Army has relied on soldiers from Ireland to bolster its ranks, resulting in a strong Irish culture being embedded into the British Army’s identity. One way this service has influenced the British Army is through the design of some of the Army’s ceremonial uniforms and equipment.

Whether it is goldwork laced shamrocks or pearl shaped harps, these traditional Irish symbols are as beautiful as they are symbolic of the contribution of Irish soldiers within the British Army.

On this special weekend course, take inspiration from the beautiful examples associated with the Irish regiments of the British Army and learn how to elevate your own embroidery skills under the supervision of tutors from Hand & Lock.
